As a global organization, Food for the Hungry is responding to the seriousness of the swine flu outbreak and the potential of a pandemic by taking important steps to ensure the safety of its staff and the communities it serves around the world.
The World Health Organization has raised its alert for swine flu to level 5 and urged all countries to intensify their preparations for a global pandemic.
For Food for the Hungry, a clear priority is the physical safety and well-being of its staff around the world and the communities it serves in impoverished countries where access to basic health care is poor.
Tom Davis and Carolyn Wetzel, Food for the Hungry health specialists who both have outstanding public health credentials and experience, have equipped our international staff, highlighting the seriousness of the swine flu along with a a Flu Preparedness Guide booklet to help educate staff on prevention and treatment of flu viruses. Our field staff is working alongside the poor in vulnerable communities around the world to prepare them for a potential pandemic.
In addition, a Pandemic Management Team within the Food for the Hungry worldwide family has been formed to provide guidelines, policies and response measures even as it directs all staff to a posture of humility, reflection and hope.
Benjamin K. Homan, president and CEO of Food for the Hungry, encouraged employees, volunteers and ministry partners to respond to the swine flu outbreak, but he also made clear that the situation is a “call for God’s people to pray, to care for the sick and to find comfort from the Most High God.”
Please pray for the children and families affected by the swine flu outbreak. We encourage you to check back on our site for updates as the situation develops.
Prayerfully consider a gift to help cover costs our staff is incurring to equip families and communities to be prepared for a possible pandemic.
