The Silent Hunger Crisis

1.02 billion hungry every day

The number of people going hungry every day would reach a record high of 1.02 billion, according to new estimates published by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

The U.N agency said this recent increase in world hunger is caused by the global economic crisis that has resulted in lower earnings and lost jobs, pushing some 100 million more people than last year into chronic hunger and poverty.

"The silent hunger crisis — affecting one sixth of all of humanity — poses a serious risk for world peace and security. We urgently need to forge a broad consensus on the total and rapid eradication of hunger in the world and to take the necessary actions."
- FAO Director General Jacques Diouf

Almost all of the world' undernourished live in developing countries. In Asia and the Pacific, an estimated 642 million people are suffering from chronic hunger; in Sub-Saharan Africa 265 million; in Latin America and the Caribbean 53 million; in the Near East and North Africa 42 million; and in developed countries 15 million in total.

The FAO warned that not only will the global slowdown destroy livelihoods in the developing world – where almost all of the world's hungry live – it will reduce aid spending from wealthy countries by around a quarter, just when it is most needed.
